Standpoints and Objectives: By utilizing our unique highland and natural biological conditions, the purpose of the Farm is to provide the equipment and manpower to promote teaching and research in the related departments of NTU, and other agricultural or biological institutes. We have also established an appropriate operation model devoted to reach the optimum slope-land management. |
History: The Farm was established in 1937. The original name was known as Wu-She Highland Farm but was not well utilized at that time. In 1952-1956, NTU faculty surveyed and considered to re-build this farm, and then formally completed renovations in Sept. 1961. The Farm was managed by NTU Experimental Forest in 1966-1973. Kang Yeou-Der, Professor of Horticulture NTU, was invited to be the director of the Farm in 1973. By the efforts of Professor Kang, The Farm has grown to the current scale to cope with the demands of teaching and research. In 2002, the Farm was renamed in 2002 as “National Taiwan University Highland Experimental Farm.” |
Natural Environments:
- (1) TOPOGRAPHY AND TERRAIN:
The Farm is located in the mountain area of Ren-Ai Township, Nantou County. The total area covers nearly 1,092 ha, and the elevation ranges from 900 to 2700 m above sea level. The Farm is divided into three areas:
- Area A is located in Truwan, shores of Wan-Da Reservoir and southern bank of Thuoshuei River. Elevation ranges from 900 to 1,800 m above sea level, and total area is 397.6 ha. The slope faces the north, and the average slope ranges from 10 to 25 degrees. This area is covered with the natural forests.
- Area B is in the northern bank of Thuoshuei River, near the Chun-Yang Village. Elevation ranges from 1,260 to 1,600 m above sea level, and total area is 45.1 ha. The average slope degrees are 5~20 degrees.
- Area C is located between Mei-Feng and Yuan-Feng. Elevation ranges from 1,700 to 2,700 m above sea level, and total area is 623.4 ha. The slope degrees are 15~30 degrees.
.
- (2) CLIMATE:
Due to the variance of elevation, climate differs greatly in different areas of The Farm. The lowest elevation Truwan valley belongs to subtropical climate zone and the highest elevation Yuan-Feng is close to temperate climate zone. In Mei-Feng, yearly average temperature is 13.7 ℃, July average highest temperature is 25.3 ℃, and average lowest temperature is 12.5 ℃. January average highest temperature is 13.0℃ and average lowest temperature is 2.5 ℃. Yearly rainfall is close to 3,200 mm, and it rains nearly 100 days a year.
- (3) HUMANITIES AND TRANSPORTATION CONDITIONS:
Provincial highway No. 14 passes the edge of Area B, and No.14 branch line penetrates through Area C. Transportation is convenient, and much of the slow-slope land is utilized by The Farm for growing temperate fruits, vegetables, and flowers.
The northeast part of Area C is 16 km to Mountain Hohuan which takes 40 minutes to drive. After another 10 km, it reaches the Da-Yu Range and connects to provincial highway No. 8. The southwest part is close to Cing-Jing Farm, 17 km to Wu-She (30 minutes drive) and connects to provincial highway No. 14. Along the highway northeastern directions from Wu-She, it is 4 km to Area B and 9 km to Lu-Shan area. Another 24 km southwest will take you to a network of several paved roads. This is a shortcut and gateway to mountains nature from city life.
- (4) CURRENT STATUS AND FACILITY OF THE FARM
- Area A : All the areas are in Truwan, the southern part of Wu-She Reservoir. The plantations in this area are all natural forest. Apart from the walking path of Taiwan Electricity Company, there are no roads and buildings at all.
- Area B : Chun-Yang sub-farm is located in Ren-Ai Township, Chun-Yang Village, around 83.5 km on provincial highway No. 14. Elevation ranges from 1,260 to 1600 m above sea level. The yearly average temperature is around 18 ℃. Total area is around 44 ha and in which around 30 ha are secondary forest and minority two-leaf pines forestation. This sub-farm is concentrated on nursery plant and plug plant production, mainly for vegetables such as cabbage, sweet pepper, celery, and lettuce. You can also find greenhouses where we plant tomatoes, strawberry and herbaceous ornamental plants. There are fern garden, aquatic plants area, and orchid garden areas. These can serve as natural ecology experience visit teaching usages. In Chun-Yang sub-farm, you can observe many kinds of frogs, insects, and birds. You can explore Chun-Yang Sub-farm to experience natural ecology, observe the automatic seed sowing processes, understand the agriculture production and operations models, and also enjoy the pleasures of picking and eating fresh fruits and experiencing harvest.
- Area C : The main farm is in this area. In the 100 ha of cultivated ground, 60 ha was planted with cabbage, but has undergone forestation and grown with local primitive trees such as mixed Taiwan alders, Chinese cork oak, green maple, Taiwan red maple, Taiwan loquat, Taiwania, and Taiwan red cypress.
