The NTU(NationalTaiwanUniversity) Highland Farm is located in Ren-AiTownship, NantouCounty which is in the geographical center of Taiwan.Its total area is around 1,092 hectares, and at an elevation range 900∼2700 meters above sea level.Its temperature zones cover subtropics, temperate zone and subtropicalclimatezone.Its natural resources are rich and plantations are versatile which includeprimitive forest, secondary forest and bushprairie etc.Mei-Feng, the major portion of this farm, is in the distance around 14.5 km from Wu-Shen(霧社) branch of Central Cross-Island Highway(中橫公路).Its elevation is 2100 meters above sea level, and belongs to temperate zone.The four seasons are distinctive from each other, each with its own characteristics.The scenery is beautiful, and the weather is pleasant.This farm has dedicated on the teaching research and operation models of garden crops such as fruit trees, mountain vegetables and temperate zone flowers etc. since 1973.We have planted several hundreds of temperate zone plants.When spring comes, all different kinds of flowers blossom with various flavors and colors which make you feel like staying in a paradise.When fall comes with pleasant climate, the frost-like red leaves and beautiful yellow flowers make you forget the time.It’s a very rare ideal place in Taiwan where you can understand, appreciate the temperate zone and alpine plants.In recent years, the over-exploitation on environment has caused the nature’s fight back which result in many disasters and epidemic diseases such as drought etc.We have deeply realized the urgency of mountain areas resources protection and proceeded the study on natural resources in this farm, planted and reserved the forest, collection and reservation of specimen.Furthermore, to awaken the environment protection consciousness we have promoted the education of nature since July 1998.We have held the nature ecology experience camp which is open to all people who cares about and are interested in nature.This camp has utilized our well-preserved natural resources and special temperate zone scenery which have been running for many years. |
The National Taiwan University Highland Experiment Farm ( hereinafter referred as “The Farm” ) was established in year 1937 by the TaihokuImperialUniversity, the predecessor of NTU(NationalTaiwanUniversity).The Farm’s original name was Wuhsheh(霧社) Highland Farm but not well utilized at that time. Surveyed in year 1955, government has felt that it’s necessary to re-build this farm then formally established in Sept. 1966, and managed by NTU Experiment Forest Management Division.In July 1974, the Ministry of Education has approved The Farm becoming an independent organization of the University.The name was changed to Highland Farm in July 1987, and the Professor Kan Yu-Do(康有德) Horticulture Department has been invited as Chief of The Farm.By the efforts of Professor Kan, The Farm has grown to the current scale.To cope with the demands of teaching and research, The Farm was renamed once more as “The National Taiwan University Highland Experiment Farm” in year 1987. |
(1) Topography and Terrain:
The Farm is located in the mountains area of Ren-AiTownship, NantouCounty.
Its total area is around 1,066 hectares, and at an elevation range 900∼2700 meters
above the sea level.It is divided into 3 areas:
Area A : is located in DoLuoWan(多羅灣), shores of Wan-Da Reservoir(萬大水庫) and southern bank of Choshui Creek.It is at an elevation range 900~1800 meters above sea level, and total area is 397.6 hectares.The slope faces to the north, and the average slope degrees are 10~25 degrees.It is covered with natural foliage forest.

Area B : is nearby the Chunyang Village(春陽村) and in the northern bank of Choshui Creek(濁水溪).It is at an elevation range 1260~1600 meters above sea level, and total area is 45.1 hectares.The average slope degrees are 5~20 degrees.

Area C : is located between Mei-Feng(梅峰) and Yuan-Feng(鳶峰).It is at an elevation range 1700~2700 meters above sea level, and total area is 623.4 hectares.The slope degrees are 15~30 degrees.
(2) Climate:
The sharp terrain causes the large variation of climate parameters in the NTU-HE Farm. For example, Do-Lo-WanBasin locates the lowest altitude and has the typical subtropical climate feature. In the other hand, Yuan-FongPeak which is 2100m height has the characteristics of temperature zone. The average temperature at Yuan-Fong is 13.7℃ with 25.3℃maximum in July and 2.5℃ minimum in January. The annual amount of precipitation is around 3200mm in 100 rainy days.
Finland Vaisala automatic weather system (MAWS) located in Yuan-Fong Farm takes the minute-resolution observation of weather information and has real-time display on four TV monitors around the administration building. English ELE weather system takes the hourly-mean observation at Chun-Yang Farm. Meteorological data quality check and graphic software are supported by the Department of Atmospheric Sciences in NationalTaiwanUniversity.
(3) Humanities and Transportation Conditions:
Except area A, the ShenDoDai(省道台) #14 Road pass the edge of area B and the ShenDoDai(省道台) #14A Road penetrate through Area C.Because of the convenience of transportation, all the smooth slope land which is close to The Farm have been utilized as fruit gardens, vegetable gardens, tea gardens and gardens of mountain flowers etc.
Area C is along the #14A Road, and its northeastern part is 16 km to Mountain Hohuan(合歡山) which takes 40 minutes to drive.Another 10 km, it comes the Da-Yu Range(大禹嶺) and connects to ShenDoDai(省道台) #8 Central Cross-Island Highway.Its southwestern part is close to Clean-Field Farm(清境農場) , 17 miles to Wuhsheh(霧社)(30 minutes drive) and connects to ShenDoDai(省道台) #14 Road there.Along the #14 Road northeastern direction from Wuhsheh(霧社), it is 4 km to Area B and 9 km to Lu-Mountain Hot Spring(蘆山溫泉)。Another 24 km at southwestern direction can reach the transportation networks of several roads which paved with pitches.This place is the shortcut gateway to mountains nature from city life.
(4)Current Status and Facility of the Farm
Area A : All the areas are in DoLuoWan(多羅灣), southern part of Wuhsheh Reservoir(霧社水庫).The plantations in this area are all natural foliage forest.Except the walking path of Taiwan Electricity Company, there are no roads and building at all.

Area B : The area is only 40 hectares and around 30 hectares are secondary forest and minority two-leaf pines afforestation.10 hectares have been reclamation to platform stage, and 2 of the 10 hectares now have simple cultivation facility such as rainproof and shading functions etc.These 2 hectares also have breeding of cross flowers family, eggplants family and grass flower seeding.They also produce potted flowers and the afforestation seed woods.The facilities include office, employees dormitory, classrooms, restaurant, kitchen and student dormitory which can contain 30 people etc.

Area C : This area is the major part of this farm.In the 100 hectares cultivated ground, there are 60 hectares did plant the cabbage.Now they have been afforestated, and have local primitive trees such as mixed red alders, oriental oaks, blue maple trees, red tree, mountain loquat, red Chinese Juniper tress etc.The other 400 hectares grass lands have been performed the afforestation for 120 hectares during the past 5 years.The 120 hectares have become secondary thin forest and planted with red alders, smelly sacrificial tree, Ali MountainSiberian elm tree, oriental oaks etc. male plants.There are another 150 hectares grass land and at an elevation 2500 meters above sea level.There are many hybrid red Indian azalea bushes to bring a spectacular scenery when these followers blossom.Another 100 hectares are natural foliage forests which are spreaded into the Yuan-Feng(鳶峰)、Shin-Zin-Hillock(新人崗)、Triangular-Feng(三角峰)、Mei-Feng(梅峰) four areas.By the preliminary survey, there are at least more than 80 kinds of high level woody plants such as narrow-leaf Lo, vegetable tobira, mountain loquat, japan fatsia, long tail tan oak, big-leaf oriental oak, red cedar, Wu Hsinshih, long-leaf Jiang shu, red-bean pine, tree zhen, Taiwan wide Chinese torreya tree etc. rare plants.Grass plants are even more than 80 kinds.
In the developed production and experiment research, the basic consideration of plants cultivation is to match local climate. The larger areas are around eight hectares orchards of apples, peach and pears etc.Here collects more than one hundred kinds of fruit trees.Also here has tuber kind, root class plants and 1~2 year grass flowers etc. many kinds of flowers.They are cultivated in simple facility, and some even cultivated by our own designed no-soil nutrition fluid.
Besides the 2.5 hectares of rain proof and sun sheltering simple facility, there also are two glass greenhouses.These greenhouses keep around 60 kinds of primitive orchid plants and more than 200 kinds of meat plants.Besides, it even has two seed-growing buildings which are with atomization equipments and preserve Taiwan mountain areas primitive woody plants more than 70 kinds. |
By utilizing our unique mountains area lands、equipments and biological conditions, The Farm is to provide the place、equipments and manpower to help the teaching research and mountain agriculture experiment research ofNTU’s related departments.We have also demonstrated the operation business model, and devoted to reach the optimum slope agriculture. |
1.Teaching Research Department
- To coordinate and assist the teaching practice and mountain agriculture experiment research of NTU’s related departments.To assist for holding the lectures, seminar and the farmer promotion activitiesTo build up the plant specimen garden and the seeds source database, and also proceed the collection, preservation, research and the breeding jobs.To build up the crops slope cultivation demonstration garden, and carry on the related researches such as related cultivation study and post-processing research etc.
- To cultivate the forest, and carry on the researches on afforestation and forest scenery improvements.
2. Operation Department(1) To plan the land utilization, carry on the jobs such as soil improvement、crops production、forest nurture、post-processing of agriculture products etc.(2) To help the Teaching Research Department’s experiment research work by providing the place、materials and maintenance management.3. Management Department (1) To take care the documents archiving, financial and the property management jobs.(2) To handle the procurement, storage, registration and sales jobs.(3) To manage the technicians and labor workers.
